A “contract under seal” is a legally binding agreement that is distinguished by the presence of a seal, which is typically affixed to the document. Historically, seals were impressed onto wax or other materials as a sign of authenticity and solemnity. In modern times, seals may be decorative or symbolic, and their presence signifies that the parties intend for the contract to be legally binding and enforceable. Contracts under seal often have a longer statute of limitations for enforcement compared to regular contracts, and they may carry additional legal significance in certain jurisdictions.
