Define: Decision

In law, a decision refers to the judgement or ruling made by a court or other adjudicative body in a legal proceeding. It represents the resolution of a dispute or controversy presented to the court and typically involves determining the rights and obligations of the parties involved. Decisions can vary in nature and scope, ranging from final judgements in trials to interim rulings on procedural matters. They are based on the application of relevant legal principles to the facts of the case and are binding on the parties involved. Decisions serve to clarify legal rights, establish precedents for future cases, and ensure the fair and orderly administration of justice.

The outcome of a proceeding before a judge, arbitrator, government agency or other legal tribunal. “Decision” is a general term often used interchangeably with the terms judgement or “opinion.” To be precise, however, a judgement is the written form of the court’s decision in the clerk’s minutes or notes, and an opinion is a written document setting out the reasons for reaching the decision.
