A general appearance in legal proceedings occurs when a defendant submits to the jurisdiction of the court without challenging it. By doing so, the defendant agrees to participate in the case and acknowledges the authority of the court over the matter. This appearance differs from a special appearance, which is made solely to contest the court’s jurisdiction.
