Define: Fast-Track

In UK law, the term “fast-track” typically refers to a streamlined procedure within the legal system aimed at expediting the resolution of certain types of cases. Fast-track procedures are designed to handle cases more quickly and efficiently than traditional litigation processes, particularly those deemed to be straightforward or less complex. The fast-track system aims to reduce delays, costs, and burdens on the court system by setting strict timetables for key stages of the legal process, limiting the scope of issues to be considered, and encouraging early settlement negotiations. Fast-track procedures are commonly used in cases such as small claims, personal injury claims, and certain types of contractual disputes. However, the specific rules and procedures governing fast-track cases may vary depending on the jurisdiction and the type of case involved.

Under the Civil procedure rules, civil cases are assigned to either the ‘small claims track’, ‘Fast-track‘ or ‘Multi-track’.

The fast-track procedure typically applies to claims that are too expensive for the small claims procedure, but less than 15,000. The characteristics are a fixed time to trial (within 30 weeks) and fixed trial costs.
