Define: Rule Scepticism

Rule scepticism is a philosophical perspective that questions the validity or universality of rules, principles, or norms as reliable guides for ethical behaviour or decision-making. It posits that strict adherence to rules may not always lead to morally right outcomes or adequately address the complexities of real-life situations. Rule sceptics argue that moral judgement should be based on individual circumstances and context rather than rigid adherence to predefined rules. They emphasize the importance of critical thinking, empathy, and flexibility in ethical reasoning, advocating for a more nuanced and situational approach to moral decision-making. Rule scepticism challenges conventional moral theories that prioritise rule-following and instead encourages a more open-minded and reflective approach to ethical dilemmas.
