1. A shortened form of the word “academic” or “academia,” referring to the educational environment or the pursuit of knowledge and learning within a specific institution or field of study.

2. A term used in the a cappella music community to describe a style of singing or a group that performs without instrumental accompaniment, relying solely on vocal harmonies and beatboxing.
Example: “The ACA group’s performance at the competition was breathtaking, showcasing their incredible vocal range and tight harmonies.”
3. A slang term used among fans of the Pitch Perfect movie franchise to refer to the fictional a cappella group, the Barden Bellas, and their associated culture and fandom.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is a comprehensive healthcare reform law enacted in the United States in 2010. The primary goal of the ACA is to increase the accessibility and affordability of health insurance coverage for individuals and families. It achieves this through various provisions, including the establishment of health insurance marketplaces, the expansion of Medicaid eligibility, and the implementation of consumer protections.
Under the ACA, individuals are required to have health insurance coverage or face a penalty, known as the individual mandate. The law also prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage or charging higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions. It provides subsidies to help lower-income individuals and families afford insurance premiums and offers essential health benefits that insurance plans must cover.
The ACA also introduced several reforms to the healthcare system, such as the creation of accountable care organisations (ACOs) to promote coordinated care and the implementation of value-based payment models to incentivize quality care. It also includes provisions to improve the quality and safety of healthcare, such as the establishment of the Centre for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to test innovative payment and service delivery models.
The ACA has faced legal challenges since its enactment, with the Supreme Court ruling on its constitutionality multiple times. Notably, in 2012, the Court upheld the individual mandate as a valid exercise of Congress’s taxing power. However, in 2017, Congress passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which reduced the penalty for not having insurance to zero, effectively eliminating the individual mandate.
Despite ongoing debates and attempts to repeal or modify the ACA, it remains a significant piece of legislation that has expanded access to healthcare for millions of Americans.
