Agnomen (noun):
1. A secondary or additional name or nickname given to a person, often used to distinguish them from others with the same name or to highlight a particular characteristic or achievement.
2. In ancient Rome, a cognomen or epithet added to a person’s name, typically indicating their family lineage, occupation, or notable accomplishment.
3. A literary or poetic device where a word or phrase is used as a substitute or alternative name for a person, place, or thing, often for the purpose of emphasizing a specific quality or attribute.
An agnomen is a term used in Roman law to refer to an additional name or title given to an individual to distinguish them from others with the same name. It was commonly used to honour or recognize a person’s achievements, characteristics, or significant events in their life. Agnomina were typically added to a person’s name and were often passed down through generations. While agnomina were not legally required, they held social and cultural significance in Roman society. Today, the concept of agnomen is not widely recognized or used in modern legal systems.
