Approaching the witness allows the attorney to engage directly with the witness and elicit testimony relevant to the case, while also providing an opportunity to challenge or impeach the witness’s credibility or version of events through questioning. However, in some courtrooms, attorneys may be required to seek permission from the judge before approaching the witness to ensure orderly and respectful conduct during proceedings.
