Date rape, also known as acquaintance rape, is a form of sexual assault that occurs when a person is forced or coerced into sexual activity by someone they know, typically in a social or dating situation. Unlike stranger rape, where the perpetrator is unknown to the victim, in date rape, the perpetrator may be a friend, acquaintance, or romantic partner. Date rape is a serious criminal offence and is often facilitated by the use of drugs or alcohol to incapacitate the victim and impair their ability to resist. Consent, which is the voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity, is a crucial factor in determining whether sexual activity is consensual or constitutes rape. In cases of date rape, consent may be absent or invalid due to factors such as coercion, manipulation, intoxication, or incapacity. Perpetrators of date rape can face criminal prosecution and may be subject to legal penalties, including imprisonment, if convicted of the offence.
