“De facto” is a Latin term meaning “in fact” or “in practice.” In legal contexts, it refers to a situation or condition that exists in reality, regardless of whether it is officially recognised or sanctioned. For example, a de facto relationship is one where two people live together as a couple, sharing a household and responsibilities, even though they may not be legally married or registered as domestic partners. Similarly, a de facto standard is a commonly accepted practice or standard that has not been formally established through official means. The term is often used to describe situations where the practical reality differs from the formal or legal status.
