Define: Emblemata Triboniani

The term “Emblemata Triboniani” refers to modifications made to the writings of older jurists in Roman law. These modifications were carried out by a commission led by Tribonian, appointed by Justinian. They are also known as interpolations, involving the addition or deletion of words to alter the meaning of a document. The purpose of these modifications was to reconcile contradictions and modernize the law, without altering the actual substance of the law.

Emblemata Triboniani, in Roman law, refers to the alterations, modifications, and additions made to the writings of older jurists. These changes were combined to form the Digest or Pandects and are commonly known as interpolations. Justinian appointed a commission led by Tribonian to reconcile contradictions, remove outdated material, and update the law. For example, the changes made to the Digest or Pandects by the commission appointed by Justinian are considered Emblemata Triboniani. The commission made editorial changes such as insertions, deletions, and juxtapositions in the texts, but made few real changes to the substantive law. In a negative sense, interpolation can refer to adding extraneous or false words into a document to change its meaning. In Roman law, an editorial change made by one of the compilers of the Digests and the Justinian Code is also known as an interpolation.
