Interruption refers to a pause in an individual’s ownership of land, preventing them from making a legal claim to the land they previously owned.

Interruptio, a Latin term meaning interruption, is used in legal contexts to describe a break in the possession of land that terminates a prescriptive claim. For example, if a landowner interrupts another person’s use of their land by asking them to stop or taking legal action, the prescriptive claim will end. Similarly, if a neighbour takes action, such as building a fence that blocks access to a driveway, it will be considered an interruptio, leading to the termination of the prescriptive claim. This means that the individuals will no longer have the legal right to use the land or driveway without permission.
