Define: Master Of The Supreme Court

In some legal systems, particularly in Commonwealth countries like the United Kingdom, the Master of the Supreme Court is a judicial officer responsible for overseeing certain administrative and procedural matters within the court. Masters assist judges in managing cases by handling pre-trial applications, conducting hearings on procedural issues, and issuing orders and directions in civil proceedings. They play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and orderly progression of cases through the court system. Masters are typically experienced lawyers or legal professionals appointed by the court to assist in its day-to-day operations and to facilitate the timely resolution of disputes.

The Masters of the Supreme Court deal with interlocutory matters (see: Interlocutory) in the Chancery and Queen’s Bench Divisions of the High Court (see: Court system of England). Masters of the Queen’s Bench division are typically barristers, while those of the Chancery Division are usually solicitors. In both cases, they must be lawyers of at least 10 years’ service. There are also ‘Taxing Masters’ who deal with issues relating to the charging and collection of Court costs.
