Quick Summary of Nothus

Nothus, also known as spurius, is a term derived from ancient Roman law. It refers to an illegitimate child, indicating that the child was born to parents who were either unmarried or not married at the time of the child’s birth. In cases where the child’s mother was a Roman citizen, the child would also be recognized as a Roman citizen.

Full Definition Of Nothus

Nothus is a term in Roman law used to describe a child born out of wedlock or to unmarried parents, making the child illegitimate and of base birth. If the child’s mother was a Roman citizen, the child would also be considered a Roman citizen. Another term for such a child is spurius. Octavian, the son of Julius Caesar’s niece and a Roman senator, is an example of a nothus. Despite being born out of wedlock, he later became the first Roman emperor, Augustus. Tiberius, the second Roman emperor, was also born to unmarried parents, making him a nothus. These examples show that being a nothus did not necessarily prevent someone from achieving great things in Roman society, but it did carry a social stigma and could limit opportunities.
