Spring Tide
Quick Summary of Spring Tide

A spring tide occurs when the moon is either new or full, causing the ocean’s water level to rise higher and fall lower than usual due to the combined gravitational pull of the moon and sun. This phenomenon is named “spring” tide because the water appears to “spring” up higher than normal.

Full Definition Of Spring Tide

A spring tide is a tide that happens during the new moon and full moon. It is higher than usual due to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon combined. During a spring tide, the high tide is higher than normal and the low tide is lower than normal. This can lead to coastal flooding. Spring tides occur twice a month, during the new moon and full moon phases. They are the opposite of neap tides, which occur during the first and last quarter of the moon and have lower tides than average.
