Ascriptitius is a term used in Roman law to refer to a person who is born into slavery. It signifies that the individual is legally bound to serve their master and lacks personal freedom. The status of being ascriptitius is inherited from one’s parents, meaning that children of enslaved individuals are also considered ascriptitius. This legal concept was prevalent in ancient Rome and formed the basis of the institution of slavery in Roman society. The rights and treatment of ascriptitius individuals were determined by their masters, who had complete control over their lives and could buy, sell, or even kill them. The legal status of ascriptitius individuals was abolished with the decline of the Roman Empire and the subsequent development of modern legal systems.
