Define: Command Theory

Command theory, in the realm of ethics and philosophy, posits that morality is rooted in authoritative commands or directives issued by a higher power, such as a deity or a sovereign ruler. According to this theory, moral obligations derive from the commands of a legitimate authority figure, and adherence to these commands forms the basis of moral duty. Proponents of command theory argue that moral principles are objective and absolute because they originate from an external authority rather than subjective human preferences or societal consensus. Critics, however, challenge command theory’s reliance on divine or sovereign authority, questioning the basis of such commands and their universal applicability. Overall, command theory offers one perspective on the nature and foundation of moral obligations, emphasising the importance of obedience to authoritative commands in ethical decision-making.
