Define: Jus Cogens

Jus cogens, Latin for “compelling law,” refers to peremptory norms of international law that are universally recognised and accepted as fundamental principles. These norms are considered non-derogable and binding on all nations, regardless of consent or agreement. Examples of jus cogens include prohibitions against genocide, slavery, torture, and crimes against humanity. Jus cogens norms are considered to have superior authority over other international agreements and customary laws, and they cannot be overridden or modified by treaties or customary practices. Violations of jus cogens norms are subject to condemnation and sanctions by the international community.
